An Alliance Made With France
Once slaves and mulattoes were declared to be free and have equal rights, many nations saw this as an opportunity to seize St. Domingue. Toussaint made and betrayed many alliances but in the end made a rocky allegiance to France.
The War of Knives
The War of Knives was a Civil War provoked by the French by playing with Rigaud and Toussaint's different interests. While Toussaint gained freedom in the south for slaves, Rigaud controlled the southern part of the island, where mulattoes had power and noirs were re-enslaved. Toussaint won the battle and put Dessalines in charge of the south and stopping any of Rigaud's followers. However the civil war barred the mulattoes and noirs from being able to work together.
